Dodoma. The CCM presidential nomination enters a crucial stage when the Central Committee (CC) meets today.
The CC is the highest decision-making organ of the ruling party that will vet the 38 presidential aspirants and is expected to come up with five names, which will be forwarded to the National Executive Committee (NEC).
The CC meeting is expected to start after President Jakaya Kikwete dissolves Parliament. The vetting will be informed by a report from the Ethics and Security Committee that sat yesterday under the chairmanship of Mr Kikwete.
Among other things, the committee reviewed all the 38 presidential aspirants and made recommendations based on how they adhered to the party’s ethics rules and regulations when seeking the nomination.
The CC is made up of 32 members and chaired by President Kikwete, who also doubles as the CCM national chairman. The committee’s decision is final and can neither be questioned nor challenged. The CC is also under no obligation to explain how it comes up with five names, according to CCM Ideology and Publicity secretary Nape Nnauye.
NEC will meet tomorrow to review the five names to be submitted by the CC vote and pick three hopefuls whose names will then be forwarded to the National Congress meeting on Saturday.
Dodoma has of late turned into a beehive of political activity.
Even before formal delegates to the CCM meetings have arrived, the town is full of people comprising camps of the various top post contenders.
As usual, rumours are abound about scandals involving one or another camp. There are some who accuse others of bribing members ahead of the meetings while allegations are rife that some camps are planning chaos in the event their candidates do not sail through.
A record 42 aspirants picked up nominations forms this year, seeking their party endorsement as presidential candidate. The number dropped to 38 after four failed to meet one condition or other. The 38 are those who managed to collect at least 450 signatures of party supporters from at least 15 regions, three of them from Zanzibar.
Authorities have already warned people to travel to Dodoma only if they have unavoidable matters to attend to, short of which, they should just stay away.
The Regional Police Commander (RPC), Mr David Misime said the town was congested as they were expecting to receive more than 10,000 people in this week alone.
